SLIDE: RISE UP

The intersection

  1. Resurrection “Rise up”
  2. Health now moving to action

Growing up, Stepping up, Facing up, Building up, Wise up, listening up, Opening up, Reaching up

Here is our overarching thought for this sermon series.

SLIDE: Very rarely in life will you or I “Rise Up” without a person or an event calling us to do so.

The stories of God + read in faith = empowers us to rise up too!

SLIDE: Rise Up – “Wise Up”  Mothers Day   (Proverbs 31)

THE LOVE OF A MOTHER!

Isaiah 49:14 Israel feels forsaken

(Can a mother forget the baby she is nursing?) I am more than that.

“Mother” is positive, not mothers, or married.

Bless ALL women.

Womanhood and Manhood BOTH IMAGE of God!

SLIDE: READ Proverbs 31:10-31

Epilogue: The Wife of Noble Character

10 A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax (knows good fabrics)
and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar. (an importer of delicacies)
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants. (breakfast in bed)
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard. (real estate broker)
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable, (she is a business woman!)
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.  (she a weaver)
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.  (works with meals on wheels)
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.  (plans far in advance)
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.  (wealth)
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.  (international business W)
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.  (sense of humor)
26 She speaks with wisdom,
    and faithful instruction is on her tongue.  (she is a source wisdom)
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
    her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised. reverence for God
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

THE ARC OF PROVERBS…

Solomon – King David’s Son  –  1 Kings 3:1  Asks for WISDOM –

MY SON – get wisdom – listen

THE FEAR OF THE LORD

Proverbs 1:7 the fear of the Lord is the beginning if wisdom

Proverbs 9:10  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

The “fear of the Lord” in the Bible is never “fright.”

awe, wonder, God’s sovereignty, God’s love, goodness and mercy.

:30 a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised!

Chapter 31 “Woman of noble Character”

31:10  “a woman of character who can find?”

Proverbs 31 is a poem. 22 acrostic

eshet chayil, “woman of valor”

It is the verb associated with LABOR!

The noun “competence, bravery, strength, efficiency, ability, valor, worth, power, substance, character”.

gibor chayil, KING DAVID’S MIGHTY MEN OF VALOR

Not just WHAT –

HOW. – with Love for others

WHY – “the fear “reverence” of the Lord”. Prov. 1:7

These women of valor!  8

Shiphrah and Puah feared God, and that gave them both the wisdom and the courage to defy the Pharaoh (Exodus 1:15-21). Rahab took a risk in siding with an opposing army because she became convinced that “The Lord your God is indeed God in heaven above and on earth below” (Joshua 2:11). Deborah knew that it was God who sent a storm that destroyed the enemy’s army (Judges 5:4). Abigail won over David by reminding him that through her intervention, “the Lord has restrained you from bloodguilt and from taking vengeance” (1 Samuel 25:26). Huldah spoke fearlessly to the king and his courtiers, beginning four times with the words, “Thus says the Lord!” (2 Kings 22:14-20). Esther negotiated peace for her people when she grasped that God had brought her to her royal position “for just such a time as this” (Esther 4:13-14).  Ruth, (BOOK ABOUT HER STORY) a pagan Moabite, left her people and emigrated to a foreign land because she embraced the God of her Jewish mother-in-law Naomi (Ruth 1:16). “Your God people will be my people and your God will be my God.”

eshet chayil, “woman of valor”

VALOR isn’t JUST about WHAT , but HOW and WHY!

31:10  “a wife of noble character who can find?”

RUTH and her story – gleaning

Ruth 3:11  BOAZ And now, my daughter, don’t be afraid. I will do for you all you ask. All the people of my town know that you are a woman of noble character.  VALOR

Not making food for children or servants-  she has none.

She is not weaving fabric of purple – she is destitute gleaning.

Not a wife – no husband to praise her – Widowed.

Not a mother – Not children to rise and call her blessed

She had chosen to “fear the Lord”.  “Your God will be MY GOD”

2nd PRIMARY THOUGHT!

Wisdom is a woman

SLIDE: Proverbs 1:20-21  Wisdom is a woman

20 Out in the open wisdom calls aloud,
she raises her voice in the public square;
21 on top of the wall she cries out,
at the city gate she makes her speech:

22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways?
How long will mockers delight in mockery
and fools hate knowledge?

Proverbs 8:1-5

SLIDE: Wisdom is a woman

Does not wisdom call out?
Does not understanding raise her voice?
At the highest point along the way,
where the paths meet, she takes her stand;
beside the gate leading into the city,
at the entrance, she cries aloud:

SLIDE: Proverbs 8: 22-36

“The Lord brought me forth as the first of his works,

before his deeds of old;
23 I was formed long ages ago,
at the very beginning, when the world came to be.
24 When there were no watery depths, I was given birth,
when there were no springs overflowing with water;
25 before the mountains were settled in place,
before the hills, I was given birth,
26 before he made the world or its fields
or any of the dust of the earth.
27 I was there when he set the heavens in place,
when he marked out the horizon on the face of the deep,
28 when he established the clouds above
and fixed securely the fountains of the deep,
29 when he gave the sea its boundary
so the waters would not overstep his command,
and when he marked out the foundations of the earth.

LISTEN TO ME!

WISDOM = A woman who Co Creates with God!

1 Corinthians 1:24 Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.

John 1:3  Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.

John 1:10  He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

Colossians 1:16  For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,; all things have been created through him and for him.

WRITTEN BY A WOMAN

Written to a son!

WOMAN not married or have children

What is the wisdom? Written from MOM to SON

11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.

CONFIDENCE BUILDS UP!

She is teaching him to see the little unseen stuff!

28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
    her husband also, and he praises her:

HOW WE TALK TO OUR WIVES MATTERS!

23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.

26 She speaks with wisdom,
    and faithful instruction is on her tongue.

31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.

Lemuel means “for God” or “devoted to God.”

Fathers and Mothers have a unique role in passing wisdom along.

Written by the MOTHER of a queen.

21 Salmon the father of Boaz,

Boaz the father of Obed,

22 Obed the father of Jesse,

and Jesse the father of David the King of Israel. (and the line of Jesus!)

a Proverbs 31 woman = fears the Lord!
