ACTS 2

2 Commands Jesus gave to his disciples

SLIDE: Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

SLIDE: Luke 24:46 Jesus told them, “This is what is written: The Messiah will suffer and rise from the dead on the third day, 47 and repentance for the forgiveness of sins will be preached in his name to all nations, beginning at Jerusalem. 48 You are witnesses of these things. 49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”

SLIDE: Acts 1:3 After his suffering, he presented himself to them and gave many convincing proofs that he was alive. He appeared to them over a period of forty days and spoke about the kingdom of God. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.”

Story!  – Pentecost  – Pentecostal  – speaking in other tongues

The Holy Spirit Comes at Pentecost

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues[a] as the Spirit enabled them.

Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken. Utterly amazed, they asked: “Aren’t all these who are speaking Galileans? Then how is it that each of us hears them in our native language?Parthians, Medes and Elamites; residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia,[b] 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya near Cyrene; visitors from Rome 11 (both Jews and converts to Judaism); Cretans and Arabs—we hear them declaring the wonders of God in our own tongues!” 12 Amazed and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”

13 Some, however, made fun of them and said, “They have had too much wine.”

Peter Addresses the Crowd

14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: “Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say. 15 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:

17 “‘In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy,
your young men will see visions,
your old men will dream dreams.
18 Even on my servants, both men and women,
I will pour out my Spirit in those days,
and they will prophesy.

EVERYONE!

OLDER TESTAMENT prophesy

JESUS:

Go into ALL THE WORLD beginning in Jerusalem!

Why?

Wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit baptizes you and you receive the POWER of the Holy Spirit.

  1. The 10 commandments: Now it will be in the POWER of the HOLY SPIRIT.

  1. Why speaking in tongues? Why giving languages?

3 REASONS!

  1. Language is central to relationship

  1. People from EVERY NATION!

SLIDE:  Go to all the nations

Wait for the power and baptism of the Holy Spirit

  1. THE OLDER TESTAMENT!

ORGINAL COMMAND GIVEN TO HUMANKIND

SLIDE: Genesis 1:28   God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

SLIDE:  Genesis 9:1 Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth.

SLIDE: The Call of Abram 12:1-2 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great and you will be a blessing

SLIDE: Genesis 26:2-5  The Lord appeared to Isaac and said, I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and will give them all these lands, and through your offspring[a] all nations on earth will be blessed,[b] because Abraham obeyed me and did everything I required of him, keeping my commands, my decrees and my instructions.”

SLIDE: Genesis 35:9-11 After Jacob returned from Paddan Aram,[c] God appeared to him again and blessed him. 10 God said to him, “Your name is Jacob,[d] but you will no longer be called Jacob; your name will be Israel.[e]”So he named him Israel. 11 And God said to him, “I am God Almighty[f]; be fruitful and increase in number. A nation and a community of nations will come from you, and kings will be among your descendants.

Command = Be fruitful multiply and fill the earth!

After Noah Genesis 9  before Abraham Genesis 12

SLIDE: The Tower of Babel – Genesis 11:1–9

11 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward,[a]they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building. The Lord said, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them. Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Be fruitful, multiply and fill the earth – scattered!

All those languages are now hearing the miracle of language!

God does not give back ONE language!

every language under heaven! Diversity!

Feet to our faith…

Speaking in tongues. – WEIRD!

700 Million Christians speak in tongues

Teaching against it.

1 Corinthians 13:8-10  Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when completeness comes, what is in part disappears.

Pentecost Sunday – The PERSON of the Holy Spirit

Story: Cruise Ship

SLIDE: 1 Corinthians 13:1 If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.

SLIDE: 1 Corinthians 14:2 & 4, 5  For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to people but to God.  :4 Anyone who speaks in a tongue edifies themselves,  I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy.

SLIDE: 1 Corinthians 14:14-15  For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful. 15 So what shall I do? I will pray with my spirit, but I will also pray with my understanding; I will sing with my spirit, but I will also sing with my understanding.

SLIDE: 1 Corinthians 14:18-19  I thank God that I speak in tongues more than all of you. 19 But in the church I would rather speak five intelligible words to instruct others than ten thousand words in a tongue.

The Holy Spirit will make me weird!

I want to apologize for that!

Holy Spirit looks like Jesus.

Holy Spirit gives us gifts so that we can live the Christian life with the Spirit’s power.

Tongues, prophecy and other gifts do this for us!
