John 5:1-15 Rise Up: Getting Up!
STORY: The boy with no immune system.
People who have had a lifetime of illness.
38 years! The illness had become his life.
We cannot even imagine the hopelessness
The Healing at the Pool
5 Some time later, Jesus went up to Jerusalem for one of the Jewish festivals. 2 Now there is in Jerusalem near the Sheep Gate a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda[a] and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 3 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie—the blind, the lame, the paralyzed.

[4] b(4—and they waited for the moving of the waters. 4 From time to time an angel of the Lord would come down and stir up the waters. The first one into the pool after each such disturbance would be cured of whatever disease they had). NO ONE WAS EVER HEALDED – MYTH
One who was there had been an invalid for thirty-eight years. 6 When Jesus saw him lying there and learned that he had been in this condition for a long time, he asked him, “Do you want to get well?”
7 “Sir,” the invalid replied, “I have no one to help me into the pool when the water is stirred. While I am trying to get in, someone else goes down ahead of me.”8 Then Jesus said to him, “Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” 9 At once the man was cured; he picked up his mat and walked. The day on which this took place was a Sabbath, 10 and so the Jewish leaders said to the man who had been healed, “It is the Sabbath; the law forbids you to carry your mat.”11 But he replied, “The man who made me well said to me, ‘Pick up your mat and walk.’ ”
12 So they asked him, “Who is this fellow who told you to pick it up and walk?”13 The man who was healed had no idea who it was, for Jesus had slipped away into the crowd that was there.14 Later Jesus found him at the temple and said to him, “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.” 15 The man went away and told the Jewish leaders that it was Jesus who had made him well.
“Do you want to get well?” – Jesus
Odd ? 38 years – defines his life
- To NEVER fall to the lie of victimhood.
If we have to regain the vision and hope that Christ brings.
Injustice and social issues
- The call to allow Jesus to heal us! (do you want to be healed).

What Jesus Doesn’t say
“Your sins are forgiven”
“Your faith has made you well”
“Do you believe?”
“Don’t you know who I am?”

In-valid = you don’t count!
Lev 21: 18 he may have been excluded from worship
Excuses: No one & Someone else,
Sin created the lack of help: 38 Years
MYTH – Salt over the shoulder
“Get up! Pick up your mat and walk.” – Jesus
‘Get up!’ = the resurrection.
A source outside of nature
“Who healed you?”
Their “Who told you to pick up your mat?”
Jesus’ condemnation of religious legalism
Jesus doesn’t freeze us but frees them up.
QUOTE: “See, you are well again. Stop sinning or something worse may happen to you.”
Jesus implies relation between personal sin and suffering (5: 14)
Jesus rejects sin as explanation for all personal suffering (9: 3)
Stand up and walk. Taking steps away from where we “used to be”
He would have to learn how to live. We assume so many things!

He has to now learn how to live in Christ!
“stop sinning or something worse may happen to you” – Jesus
- Jesus does and will speak to us about the sin our lives. It is serious! HE LOVES US!
- Jesus does not teach or believe that all sickness is due to personal sin. John 9: “his sin or his parents?” NEITHER
- Being sinless does not come before being healed.
- What sin? The bible intentionally does not tell us!
He knew what it was!
Jesus speaks to every area of life
FEET TO OUR FAITH
Go for prayer
Not a victim you are a Christian
Walk away from other Gods
Walk away from Sin
Tell others about Jesus
