SLIDE: The Parable of the Sower and the Seed.

SLIDE:  Matthew 13:3-8 – Verbally share the parable

“A farmer went out to sow his seed.

  1. path, and the birds came and ate it up.

  1. Rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, the plants were scorched, and they had no root.

  1. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants.

  1. still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

Jesus explains his parable:

SLIDE: Matthew 13:18-23  (on the large screens)

18 “Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in their heart. This is the seed sown along the path.20 The seed falling on rocky ground refers to someone who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away.22 The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful. 23 But the seed falling on good soil refers to someone who hears the word and understands it. This is the one who produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”

SLIDE: God as a farmer

OLDER TESTAMENT SCRIPTURE

Psalm 65:9-13   (on the large screens)

You care for the land and water it; you enrich it abundantly. The streams of God are filled with water to provide the people with grain, for so you have ordained it.[a] 10 You drench its furrows and level its ridges; you soften it with showers and bless its crops. 11 You crown the year with your bounty, and your carts overflow with abundance. 12 The grasslands of the wilderness overflow; the hills are clothed with gladness. 13 The meadows are covered with flocks and the valleys are mantled with grain; they shout for joy and sing.

God provides Day and Night, The sky for rain, and dry ground for crops.

Genesis 1:12-13 The land produced vegetation: plants bearing seed according to their kinds and trees bearing fruit with seed in it according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.  And there was evening, and there was morning—the third day.

39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”
