Life In The Spirit: Missions

Sermon Notes

SLIDE: Life in the Spirit

Genesis 1:28  Adam and Eve

God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth.”

Noah

Genesis 9:7:  As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply on the earth and increase upon it.”

The Tower of Babel

Genesis 11:

11 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar[b] and settled there.

They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. Then they said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.”

Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”

So the Lord scattered them from there over all the earth, and they stopped building the city. That is why it was called Babel[c]—because there the Lord confused the language of the whole world. From there the Lord scattered them over the face of the whole earth.

Father of the Jewish Faith!

Abraham 17:6

“I will make you very fruitful; I will make nations of you, and kings will come from you.”

Isaac

Genesis 26:4 “I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven, and will give your descendants all these lands; and by your descendants all the nations of the earth shall be blessed;

Matthew 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 1:8  But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 2:4 All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues (languages) as the Spirit enabled them.

Acts 2:5  Now there were staying in Jerusalem God-fearing Jews from every nation under heaven. When they heard this sound, a crowd came together in bewilderment, because each one heard their own language being spoken.

Saul Makes Trouble for the Church

Acts 8:2 At that time the church in Jerusalem suffered terribly and scattered everywhere in Judea and Samaria.

Feet to your faith!

Be a witness here!

Justice:  Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.     1884 Memorial Day Speech

“In our Youth Our Hearts were touched with fire”

But grief is not the end of all. I seem to hear the funeral march become a paean. (a song of praise or triumph)

I see beyond the forest the moving banners of a hidden column. Our dead brothers still live for us, and bid us think of life, not death–of life to which in their youth they lent the passion and joy of the spring. As I listen, the great chorus of life and joy begins again, and amid the awful orchestra of seen and unseen powers and destinies of good and evil our trumpets sound once more a note of daring, hope, and will.

A Memorial Day Prayer:  Shall we pray?

In the quiet sanctuaries of our own hearts,
let each of us name and call on the One whose power over us
is great and gentle, firm and forgiving, holy and healing …

You who created us,
who sustain us,
who call us to live in peace,
hear our prayer this day.

Hear our prayer for all who have died,
whose hearts and hopes are known to you alone …

Hear our prayer for those who put the welfare of others
ahead of their own
and give us hearts as generous as theirs …

Hear our prayer for those who gave their lives
in the service of others,
and accept the gift of their sacrifice …

Help us to shape and make a world
where we will lay down the arms of war
and turn our swords into ploughshares
for a harvest of justice and peace …

Comfort those who grieve the loss of their loved ones
and let your healing be the hope in our hearts…

Hear our prayer this day
and in your mercy answer us
in the name of all that is holy.

Jesus Christ

Amen.
