Sermon Notes

SLIDE: Messy Church – Money SEX and power

Young ears.

Not condemnation – a call to holiness and wholeness

In Corinth they were liberated sexual people.

1 Corinthians 5:12  – not for Policing the World

SLIDE:  1 Corinthians 1:1-3

Paul, called to be an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, and our brother Sosthenes, To the church of God in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus and called to be his holy people, together with all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ—their Lord and ours.

SLIDE: 1 Corinthians 6:15-20

15 Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”[a] 17 But whoever is united with the Lord is one with him in spirit.[b]

18 Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. 19 Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.

Paul references Genesis – so does Jesus

SLIDE: Matthew 19:2-6  – Jesus Christ

Large crowds followed him, and he healed them there.

Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any and every reason?”

“Haven’t you read,” he replied, “that at the beginning the Creator ‘made them male and female,’[a] and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh’[b]So they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”

Paul Introduces 2 concepts

  1. One Flesh – Jesus
  2. Sexual Immorality –

  1. ONE FLESH… ?

SLIDE: Genesis 2:23-25   NAKED AND NO SHAME

The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.” That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.  Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.

Spiritual, emotional, relational, physical – becoming ONE

1 Corinthians 6:16 Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, “The two will become one flesh.”

SLIDE: Sexual Immorality 1 Corinthians 6:12-13

12 “I have the right to do anything,” you say—but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13 You say, “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, and God will destroy them both.” The body, however, is not meant for sexual immorality (porneia)  but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body.

“I have the right to do anything” – beneficial?

“I have the right to do anything”

“I will not be mastered”  – it is now running you!

Sex is like food – appetite – satisfy – done

All physical and all just biological

In Mere Christianity, C. S. Lewis writes,

“The monstrosity of sexual intercourse outside of marriage is that those who indulge in it are trying to isolate one union (sexual) from all other kinds of union, which are meant to go along with it and make up the total union. The Christian attitude doesn’t mean that there is anything wrong about sexual pleasure . . . It means that you mustn’t isolate that pleasure and try to get it by itself, anymore than you ought to try to get the pleasure of taste without swallowing and digesting, by chewing things and spitting them out again.”

SLIDE: 1 Cor. 7:1-4  Concerning Married Life  (Porneia)

Now for the matters you wrote about: “It is good for a man not to have sexual relations with a woman.” But since “sexual immorality” is occurring, each man should have sexual relations with his own wife, and each woman with her own husband. The husband should fulfill his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife.
