Follow Jesus and Serve Others

SLIDE: Jesus Forgives and Heals a Paralyzed Man

A few days later, when Jesus again entered Capernaum, the people heard that he had come homeThey gathered in such large numbers that there was no room left, not even outside the door, and he preached the word to them. Some men came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them. Since they could not get him to Jesus because of the crowd, they made an opening in the roof above Jesus by digging through it and then lowered the mat the man was lying on. When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Immediately Jesus knew in his spirit that this was what they were thinking in their hearts, and he said to them, “Why are you thinking these things? Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all. This amazed everyone and they praised God, saying, “We have never seen anything like this!”

Picture the scene –  Heads hanging down

What you say next matters…  It will be remembered.

:5 When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralyzed man, “Son, your sins are forgiven.”

“he said to the paralyzed man” – The Pressing need –

“Son, your sins are forgiven.”

Faith for the real world!

The pressing need that brings them to Jesus…

Is NOT “The Priority” for Jesus.

Why you came to Jesus-

Grieving

Life wasn’t going well

A moral and an ethic for your kids

Relational struggles

Fear and anxiety

searching for Peace

Emptiness – grasping and ladder climbing

He will make my life better

I need help to tweak a few things

Jesus loves us too much to not deal with the core issues of our lives… sin.

First or initial act of forgiveness

Faith for the real world!

2 highly recommended places –

  1. UVA fraternity –
  2. Albemarle County Jail – Avon Street Ex

2 we would NEVER recommend

  1. Your own home.
  2. UVA rehab center for Paralyzed people

Paralyzed people are not known for sinning.

:5 “Son, your sins are forgiven” – Jesus

“sin” the one that got you here.

Paralyzed

Can’t  “earn’ forgiveness

Can’t undo sins

If HE needs forgiveness – we ALL do.

6 Now some teachers of the law were sitting there, thinking to themselves, “Why does this fellow talk like that? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?”

Who can forgive “a sin” –  IF YOU HAVE SINNED AGAINST ME!

Who is going to pay?

Sin example – House is robbed.

In a home – not in the temple – sacrifice

Started –  Get up and walk!

The 4th of July – Fireworks FREEDOM

Are people truly free?

Jesus’ priority

Which is easier: to say to this paralyzed man, ‘Your sins are forgiven,’ or to say, ‘Get up, take your mat and walk’? 10 But I want you to know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins.” So he said to the man, 11 “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” 12 He got up, took his mat and walked out in full view of them all.

SLIDE: SON OF MAN

Daniel 7: 13-14 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence.14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.

TRINITY! He is God the son.

SON OF MAN.

When Jesus forgives

  1. You are Free!

More than a clean slate – a do over – a second chance

Truly freed up from yourself.

  1. A fundamental change in you. You become a different person

Jesus does heals him! –

The pressing need that brings them to Jesus is met.

SLIDE: Mark 2:13-17

Jesus Calls Levi and Eats With Sinners

13 Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. 14 As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector’s booth. “Follow me,” Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.

15 While Jesus was having dinner at Levi’s house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. 16 When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: “Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?”

17 On hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”

Levi’s house!  –  Forgiveness in a home.

Jewish: Eats with sinners!

Revelation 3:20  Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me. – Jesus

His priority is – forgiving you of your SINS.

Have you accepted that?
