The Gospel of Mark

Who wrote it? – “John Mark”

No name or credit is given.

Barnabas, his cousin Col. 4:10,

Gave his property Acts 4:36

Mary, John Mark’s mother living in Jerusalem, where church gathers at her home (Acts 12:12).

Apostle Peter angel released from prison

Acts 12:12  When this had dawned on Peter, he went to the house of Mary the mother of John, also called Mark, where many people had gathered and were praying.

Barnabas and Mark had both already shared in Gentile missionary outreach at Antioch in any case, (Acts 12:25),

The Apostle Paul, Barnabas and “John Mark” took a missionary journey Acts 13:2-5,

Mark turns back in Acts 13:13

After the split between Barnabas and Paul over Mark, Barnabas took Mark back with him to Cyprus (Acts 15:39)

Acts 15:39-41  They had such a sharp disagreement that they parted company. Barnabas took Mark and sailed for Cyprus, 40 but Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the believers to the grace of the Lord. 41 He went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.

Whatever Paul felt about Mark’s departure at the time (Acts 15:38), in much later years Mark appears as associated with Paul (Col. 4:10 and 2 Tim. 4:11), and also as a close junior colleague of Peter (1 Pet. 5:13),

1 Peter 5:13  She who is in Babylon, chosen together with you, sends you her greetings, and so does my son Mark.

SLIDE: Mark 1

John the Baptist Prepares the Way

1 The beginning of the good news about Jesus the Messiah,[a] the Son of God,  2 as it is written in Isaiah the prophet:

“I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way”[c]
“a voice of one calling in the wilderness,
‘Prepare the way for the Lord,
make straight paths for him.’”[d]

And so John the Baptist appeared in the wilderness, preaching a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. The whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem went out to him. Confessing their sins, they were baptized by him in the Jordan River. John wore clothing made of camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. And this was his message: “After me comes the one more powerful than I, the straps of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie. I baptize you with[e]water, but he will baptize you with[f] the Holy Spirit.”

The Baptism and Testing of Jesus

At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan.10 Just as Jesus was coming up out of the water, he saw heaven being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. 11 And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

12 At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, 13 and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted[g] by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.

Jesus Announces the Good News

14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God.15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”
