Heaven’s Song: JOY – Joseph

This advent Sunday is all about JOY.

SLIDE: Galatians 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.

SLIDE: Acts 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy and with the Holy Spirit.

SLIDE: You became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you welcomed the message in the midst of severe suffering with the joy given by the Holy Spirit.  1 Thessalonians 1:6

SLIDE: For the JOY set before him Jesus endured the cross scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of the father. Hebrews

Process through.  To postpone immediate gratification.

SLIDE: Joy is not an experience that comes from favorable circumstances but is God’s gift through the Holy Spirit to those who follow him.

SLIDE: Joseph’s life-changing dream.  (Jason Baker reads)

Matthew 1:18-25

In prayer what I noticed and God placed in my heart.

Who is Joseph?  What do we know about him?

Name =Joseph.  He is the one who saves Israel. DREAMS

Son of King David.  Israel’s favorite king.

Joseph carpenter = a stone mason

He is engaged “betrothed” to Mary.

OLDER than Mary.

last to know.  No personal visit

WHO REMEMBERS THEIR DREAMS?

MARY TOLD HIM

HE DECIDES TO DIVORCE HER QUIETLY.

Her pregnancy has now become the center of his life.

Shame and disregard.

Joseph postpones physical intimacy until after Jesus is born

Name his Jesus.

You name him JESUS –  Joshua. God delivers or God saves.

SLIDE: Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet, did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly. Matthew 1:19

Isaiah 42:3   A bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice.

SLIDE: “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”   -The Angel  Matthew 1:20-21

KNOW 3 things.

SLIDE: When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.    Matthew 1:24-25

SLIDE: FEET to YOUR FAITH.

SLIDE: Maybe our faith could use some waking up?

SLIDE: Do I have the joy the Holy Spirit brings?

SLIDE: Like Joseph, what is it God is asking me to do because of Jesus?

SLIDE: Will I commit to walking out God’s righteousness in a way that shows kindness and self-sacrifice.
